David Hockney at RA

Last night I went to the David Hockney show at the RA(Royal Academy) of works commissions just 4 years ago. The scale of the pictures was designed especially to go on RA's big walls.
Pretty much the hottest show in town. So hot the exhibit is open till midnight on Fridays. I went at 6pm and waited about a half hour. It was very cold and I was not dressed properly. Nevermind.
Once inside it was warm and crowded in a cocktail party manner...
People were milling around somewhat matter of factly...
I LOVED this wall of big casual watercolors.
Of course one shouldn't be taking photos! Of course not...
LOVED this big value study charcoal drawing - there were lots of these too.
There was lots of everything David Hockney landscape.
 Big rooms full of it...
And many HUGE paintings I didn't dare to shoot - one made up of 60 canvases!
The Hockney nine-screen films are wonderful.
Loved this tap dancing number to Tea For Two.
 This chair is soooo Hockney.
Then the Yorkshire Wolds landscape films, shot with 9 cameras mounted on the bonnet of a slow-moving jeep. Hockney sat in the back seat directing, using a grid of 9 monitors to 'draw' the scene. Hockney does not view this new strand of his work as a diversion, but rather another method of depicting the landscape.
Outside endless books on Hockney to peruse - a big room full of them.
A Hockney number painting printed on watercolor paper(3.95£) so you can DIY.
A terrific small facsimile of a David Hockney watercolor sketchbook.
A page inside is full of layered patterns, yet fresh and spontaneous.
Doesn't my (very warming) veggie soup from Itsu(3.20£) accross the street from RA look a bit similar?
I should have bought this Hockney fridge magnet(3.95£)
 Or a Hockney tree cup(?£). Instead I bought a red wooley non-Hockney scarf(50£) Brrrrrrrr
Don't miss the Hockney show if you're in London.
And if you're not, get on the next plane/train over.

HUGO

Do you LOVE train stations too? HUGO Especially train stations in Paris...
HUGO All that hub-bub. And the anticipation, the expectations!
So much more managable than airports too.
And the big clocks!
Tick-tock...tick-tock.
Is it time yet?
I saw Hugo yesterday based on the graphic novel, The Invention of Hugo Capret...

It takes place in a train station...
HUGO A Paris train station...
HUGO What could be better?
There are mystery sketchbooks in Hugo...
HUGO And a mysterious automaton...
HUGO AND Paris dogs.
TWO of them - a perfect movie no?
HUGO The perfect movie to see on New Years Day 2012 perhaps?
Are you ready for 2012?
HUGODo you know where you'll go?
HUGO ALL ABOARD for 2012!
Tick-tock..tick-tock
See you next year PBers

Onsite Sketching!

I finally bought my ticket for Paris last night - YAHOO
I'm the world's worse procrastinator when it comes to purchasing plane tickets - toujours les meme choise

It hit me I better get out there and warm up sketching onsite. This is the News Cafe - rue Vavin 75006...
'Course the last time I went out sketching I came down with a rotten case of sciatica so I better be careful (Mariage Freres)

Onsite sketching can be deleterious to your health :(
Le Pain Quotidien is the perfect place to sketch onsite since you're surrounded by lovely subject matter...

Angelina is nothing to sniff at either...mais oui

Yes I am doing back my exercises!!

Basically this is a 'nudge' post to get me cracking...

A nice thing about having a blog is you can post a visual reminder to yourself...

Then you've got your subscribers (Hi PBers!) to give you the occasional petit kick dans le derriere in case you forget...

I have never drawn onsite like this! I seek refuge in a cafe/salon de the. I am not so fearless. Perhaps I should try in October? Oui o non? Ok I'm going sketching now...

BONJOUR ONSITE SKETCHING!

Artist's Journal Workshop

I'm awfully late posting today Darling PBers I know, but you overwhelmed me with your enthusiasm for yesterday's Bordeaux chateaux watercolors!

WOW WOW WOW & BIG MERCI! I would head off for Paris this minute if it wasn't the worse time of the year to do so. *FYI-if you bought more than 1 painting yesterday you were overcharged on shipping and it will be refunded to you PDQ. I messed up filling out the forms on Etsy.

Please forgive :(

On to the wonderful subject of sketchbook journals - they seem to be rampant these days. And why not? Travelers forever have been recording their thoughts, notes and doodles in journals/carnet du voyage.
You don't have to be a so-called 'artiste' to join in the fun. Not at all!

Cathy Johnson's latest, ARTIST'S JOURNAL WORKSHOP will tell you how if you have any doubts at all how to begin doodling in a journal...

Wouldn't you know some PBers are in this book! Rick Tulka, who has nothing to do in Paris but hang out all day, everyday in Cafe Le Select clandestinely sketching - his drawings are brill.

PBer Jeanette, Mistress of Longears Manoir, who mostly spends her time madly chasing rabbits off her estate/chateau in Kansas city is also well represented.

You don't have to be an artist to go crazy over tiny paintboxes (see above). I picked up another little one in Portland, Maine last Saturday though Gawd only knows why!! These things are like macarons - addictive.

Cathy's book addresses important issues like overcoming first page jitters or how to draw your lunch or your sleeping cat or when you should journal. She has a blog as well devoted to sketch journaling.

At one point I used to make my own sketbook-journals...

There are piles of these things lurking in my closet...

Along with my 'Bordeaux chateau' period and 'Daffodil' period I had 'Gondolier
Fever' for a while... It's a pretty contagious disease...

You're bound to catch it at one time or another. You don't even have to go to Venice to get it but it certainly helps.

I'm thinking of having a Gondolier Fever SALE...

Full details tomorrow.

BIG MERCI PBers!!!
